Carissa Macrocarpa
The Carissa Macrocarpa also known as Natal Plum, is an evergreen shrub native to South Africa, provided with fleshy, shiny bright green leaves and a stem with many bifurcated thorns.
The flowering occurs in late Spring till the beginning of Autumn, covering itself with white star shaped flowers with the particularity of emanating a fragrance which during the night tends to intensify. In addition, it produces many deep purple fruits similar to small plums rich in beneficial properties for their high content of vitamin C, antioxidant, magnesium, potassium and iron.
The Carissa Macrocarpa prefers full sun exposure, being native to very warm climate zones and it has little resistance to cold. It has no problem with dry seasons while on the contrary suffers water stagnation and so performs at its best in well drained soils.
Furthermore, the plant tolerates salty winds well, which makes it an excellent choice for coastal areas.
